PORTLAND TIMBERS vs SEATTLE SOUNDERS
PROVIDENCE PARK, Portland, Ore.
June 28, 2015 (WEEK 17, MLS Game #176)
7 p.m. ET (Fox Sports 1)
MLS Heineken Rivalry Week concludes with another meeting of intense Cascadia Cup foes, as the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders FC face off yet again on Sunday evening at Providence Park before a FOX Sports 1 audience. Sounders FC won earlier this season in a league meeting, and just a week ago, the teams met in a bitterly contested U.S. Open Cup match, won by the Timbers. Both teams are coming off midweek defeats, the Timbers having their record four-game league winning run put to an end in a 5-0 crash at the LA Galaxy, while Sounders FC suffered a second consecutive MLS loss in a 1-0 defeat at Philadelphia Union.
  • The teams are meeting for the second time in league play this season, Clint Dempsey scoring the game’s lone goal for a Sounders FC victory April 26 in Seattle.
  • The teams also met in a fractious affair in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup last Tuesday, Sounders FC having three players sent off in a 3-1 Timbers win. Rodney Wallace and Maximiliano Urruti scored in extra time to send the Timbers through, just the second time in their MLS history that Sounders FC have been eliminated in their first match in the competition.
  • The Timbers have never won in Seattle in regular season play, Sounders FC now with a 4-0-2 league record in games at CenturyLink Field. But the Timbers did win there in the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2013, as well as the Open Cup matchup this year.
  • Versions of the club have faced one another in the NASL, Western Soccer League, APSL/A-League/USL First Division and now MLS. Overall, the clubs have met 90 times in official competitions, Seattle winning 46 times, Portland winning 32, and 12 draws.

June 28, 2015 (WEEK 17, MLS Game #175)
4:30 p.m. ET (ESPN, ESPN Deportes, TSN5)
The second Hudson River derby highlights the final day of MLS Heineken Rivalry Week when New York City FC play host to the New York Red Bulls on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium before an ESPN2 audience. It’s the second meeting ever between the clubs, after the Red Bulls took a 2-1 win on the red side of the river a month ago. NYCFC enter the match riding a club-record three-game winning streak, sitting just three points behind the Red Bulls following a 2-0 win at Toronto FC last weekend. The Red Bulls put a halt to a four-game losing slide at midweek, holding out for a 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake at Red Bull Arena.
  • The teams are meeting for the second time this season. In the first matchup between the cross-river rivals, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a pair of goals to lead the Red Bulls to a 2-1 win May 10 at Red Bull Arena. The final league encounter this season is set for Aug. 9 in Harrison.
  • New York City FC extended their winning streak to three games – the only winning streak the club has enjoyed since coming to MLS – following their 2-0 win at Toronto FC on Saturday evening.
  • David Villa scored a pair of goals in the same game for the first time in his MLS career, netting both goals in the TFC victory. Villa has six goals in MLS play this season, tied for ninth-most in the league.
  • Anatole Abang scored for a second consecutive game – his second career MLS goal in his ninth appearance – in the Red Bulls’ 2-1 home loss to Vancouver, their fourth consecutive defeat.
  • They rebounded with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena, with Mike Grella scoring in the fourth minute to provide the only goal.

10:30 p.m. ET (MLS LIVE)
The California Clásico is featured in MLS Heineken Rivalry Week as the San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy face off for the first time this season at Stanford Stadium on Saturday evening. The Quakes return home off an impressive victory, defeating Western Conference leaders Seattle Sounders FC 2-0 at CenturyLink Field last weekend. The Galaxy have been unstoppable in the past week, scoring five goals in back-to-back matches, last a 5-0 dismantling of the Portland Timbers on Wednesday evening at StubHub Center.
  • The Quakes snapped a three-game winless run in league play as Matias Perez Garcia scored his first MLS goal and added an assist for a 2-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field.
  • Baggio Husidic scored a goal and added two assists in the Galaxy’s 5-1 win against Philadelphia Union, the second time in his MLS career he’s been involved in three goals in a game. He had two goals and an assist in the 6-0 Galaxy win vs. Colorado, Sept. 5, 2014.
  • The Galaxy have won just once in the last 10 regular season meetings in northern California, across three stadiums – a 1-0 victory last June 28 at Stanford Stadium.
