A critical match in the Eastern Conference is ahead on Independence Day as Columbus Crew SC play host to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening at Mapfre Stadium. The teams are separated by just two points in the conference standings, both hanging onto top-six positions. Crew SC are back home after a come-from-behind 2-2 draw at Real Salt Lake last weekend, while the Red Bulls are coming off a second consecutive win, their second win against cross-river rivals New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Crew SC saw their road winless streak extended to eight games, but still stretched their current undefeated run to three contests, coming away from Rio Tinto Stadium with a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening.
Ethan Finlay collected an assist for a third consecutive game in the RSL draw, now leading MLS with 10 assists for the season.
The Red Bulls won their second consecutive game after a four-game losing slide, storming back with three second-half goals to win their second Hudson River derby of the year, defeating New York City FC 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Bradley Wright-Phillips and Mike Grella scored second-half goals as the Red Bulls claimed a 2-1 victory, March 28 in Columbus.
The Red Bulls have taken points on five of their last six visits to Columbus, dating back to 2011, with two victories there in that time. Crew SC won 3-1 at Red Bull Arena last Oct. 19, their first win at the Red Bulls since 2010. The Red Bulls had won two of the four home meetings in between, with two draws.
NEW YORK CITY FC vs NEW YORK RED BULLS YANKEE STADIUM, Bronx, N.Y. June 28, 2015 (WEEK 17, MLS Game #175) 4:30 p.m. ET (ESPN, ESPN Deportes, TSN5)
The second Hudson River derby highlights the final day of MLS Heineken Rivalry Week when New York City FC play host to the New York Red Bulls on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium before an ESPN2 audience. It’s the second meeting ever between the clubs, after the Red Bulls took a 2-1 win on the red side of the river a month ago. NYCFC enter the match riding a club-record three-game winning streak, sitting just three points behind the Red Bulls following a 2-0 win at Toronto FC last weekend. The Red Bulls put a halt to a four-game losing slide at midweek, holding out for a 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake at Red Bull Arena.
The teams are meeting for the second time this season. In the first matchup between the cross-river rivals, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a pair of goals to lead the Red Bulls to a 2-1 win May 10 at Red Bull Arena. The final league encounter this season is set for Aug. 9 in Harrison.
New York City FC extended their winning streak to three games – the only winning streak the club has enjoyed since coming to MLS – following their 2-0 win at Toronto FC on Saturday evening.
David Villa scored a pair of goals in the same game for the first time in his MLS career, netting both goals in the TFC victory. Villa has six goals in MLS play this season, tied for ninth-most in the league.
Anatole Abang scored for a second consecutive game – his second career MLS goal in his ninth appearance – in the Red Bulls’ 2-1 home loss to Vancouver, their fourth consecutive defeat.
They rebounded with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena, with Mike Grella scoring in the fourth minute to provide the only goal.

The New York Red Bulls and Colorado Rapids will kick off Week 9 of the 2015 MLS season on Wednesday when Pablo Mastroeni and Co. travel to Harrison to take on the Eastern Conference power at Red Bull Arena. New York are the lone remaining unbeaten team in MLS, having moved their record to 3-0-3 after drawing the LA Galaxy 1-1 at home on Sunday. The Red Bulls set a club record for longest unbeaten streak to start a season on Sunday, breaking the five-game unbeaten run achieved at the start of the 2007 season, with a 1-1 draw against LA on Sunday to move to 3-0-3 on the year. While they stayed unbeaten, the Red Bulls fell out of first in the East with the result, slipping behind weekend winners New England Revolution and D.C. United.
Felipe scored his first goal in a Red Bulls uniform on Sunday, fortuitously getting on the end of a deflected ball in the box and heading a close-range effort home to tie the game in the 58th minute. Felipe was acquired by New York this offseason in a trade with Montreal that reunited the Brazilian midfielder with first-year Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch, whom he played under when Marsch coached the Impact in 2012.
The Rapids bounced back from a 3-1 home defeat to Seattle with a 1-1 draw against Dallas in their last match, getting a second-half equalizer from midfielder Nick LaBrocca to earn a point at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Friday. While Colorado picked up a result, they weren't entirely thrilled with their performance, which saw the Rapids hold a man advantage for the final 30 minutes after Dallas forward Blas Perez was ejected in the 59th minute.
The sides drew their lone meeting against each other last season, playing to a 1-1 tie at Red Bull Arena on March 15, 2014. Thierry Henry opened the scoring, giving the Red Bulls a 57th-minute lead before Rapids attacker Vicente Sanchez equalized with a 72nd-minute penalty kick.
The Rapids have never won at Red Bull Arena, posting a 2-0-2 record in four regular-season contests at New York.
