PROVIDENCE PARK, Portland, Ore.
July 5, 2015 (WEEK 18, MLS Game #184)
8 p.m. PT (ESPN2 / ESPN Deportes; TSN2)
A crucial match in the Western Conference is ahead on MLS Soccer Sunday as the Portland Timbers play host to the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park before an ESPN2 audience. The teams are separated by just three points in the division, with the Timbers in a tie for third, and the Quakes currently sitting outside the playoff positions. Both teams won rivalry games last weekend: the Timbers returning to their winning ways with a dominant 4-1 win against Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday at home, while the Quakes defeated the LA Galaxy 3-1 on Saturday evening.
  • The Timbers won their fifth game in their last six league contests in impressive fashion, storming to a 4-1 win against arch-rivals Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park, their second win over their Cascadia foes in 10 days after a U.S. Open Cup win.
  • Fanendo Adi scored two goals yet again in a game in the Timbers’ win against Sounders FC. In the 10 games when Adi has scored a goal since coming to MLS (17 goals in all), he's scored two goals in seven of those games. He is now in a tie for third place in the MLS Golden Boot standings with eight goals.
  • Matias Perez García recorded two assists – one on Chris Wondolowski’s ninth of the goal of the season, second-most in MLS this season – as the Quakes took a 3-1 win against arch-rivals LA Galaxy on Saturday evening at Stanford Stadium. Perez García has a goal and three assists over the last two matches.
  • The Timbers claimed the season series a year ago, with two wins in three meetings (and one draw), entirely played over a 31-day span.
  • The Timbers’ 2-1 victory on Oct. 4 of last year in Santa Clara was the first by a visiting team in the all-time league series. The Timbers have won three of six matches in Portland, with three draws, including a 3-0 win in the last meeting at Providence Park, on Oct. 8.
