Union matched the heaviest defeat in club history in their 5-1 loss at the LA Galaxy on Saturday evening. Union had allowed five goals on three previous occasions in the club’s five seasons; the 5-1 loss equaled a defeat by the similar scoreline in a 2013 loss to New England.
After losing Obafemi Martins to injury and Clint Dempsey to suspension in a midweek defeat by Portland in the U.S. Open Cup, Sounders FC lost at home in league play for the first time since March 14 in their 2-0 defeat by the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field.
The Union have never lost to Sounders FC at PPL Park. After a 3-1 Philadelphia win vs. Seattle in the grand opening of the new stadium in 2010, the teams have played to draws in their last meetings in Chester.
Sounders FC have won the last two meetings between the teams at CenturyLink Field, including a 2-1 win last May 3 in the only encounter between the clubs.
